Name jokes

Tonight in class, I had a female student show up named John.  I kid you not.  She goes by another name, but her official legal name is John.  How odd is that?

It reminds me conversations the husband and I used to have when I was pregnant (both times) about giving our children sexually ambiguous names (e.g. Pat, Terry, Chris, Taylor), names that are impossible to spell (e.g. Supercalafrajalisticexbealadocious), or names that are spelled one way but sound another way (e.g. Eubnskfcyb, pronounced Josh).  We'd get to the point of tears because we were laughing so hard, probably at someone's expense, but boy was it great.

It makes you wonder about the parents that give their children names that belong more for the opposite sex.  Why name a girl John?  Why give a boy a very girl name (e.g. Princess)?  It doesn't make any sense to me.  Let's give the child at least one leg up in the world by giving him/her a decent name!
