MTNA Conference + Family Visit

This morning, I got up bright and early to go help out with the MTNA National Junior Strings Competition finals.  My job was to be the timer and keep all the students at under a 20 minute performance.  Out of the seven, only two came close to the time limit, so most of the time I just got to enjoy the fabulous 6 violinists (all girls) and 1 cellist (the sole boy).  I couldn't believe they were 11-14 years old - they all played as well as some college students I know!  In the end, the two I picked as my favorites finished 1st and 3rd, so I must know something about picking winners.  ;)  It was great fun, and I hope I get to do it again in the future.  I also appreciated meeting the people in charge of the competitions, as I've done the composition competition for 5 years now and can now put faces with names.

In the afternoon/evening, we had dinner with the husband's brother and his family at Rainforest Cafe.  It was fun (pricey), and then we got to hang out in our hotel room afterwards.  The kids were all so happy to be there and playing, I loved watching them.  I can't believe how big my niece and nephew are getting - almost 3 years old and 5 months old?!?  Crazy how time flies.

After that, L and I bopped downstairs really quick so that we could watch the opening piece of the Ahn Trio's recital.  It was phenomenal!  As soon as they started playing, L's face lit up with pure joy and excitement, and she had a smile plastered on her face through the entire thing.  It makes me so happy that I'm able to share good classical music with her at such a young age, AND that she enjoys listening to it.  Of course, being 4 years old, she got bored very quickly, was tired, and wanted to see Daddy, so we left after the first piece.  It's a start!
